another link worth checking out

i seemto be into links at the moment- check out this one from an op-ed in today's NY Times. when the nba went to three refs, everyone thought it would ruin the flow of the game- and that hasnt happened. two refs in soccer seems so obvious to me (combined with some sort of post game video policing to combat cheats like C. Ronaldo and anyone else from Portugal or Argentina).

Just a brief comment for the moment on the 2 whistle system. Many high schools use the system now and the Ref and I have done many games together using it. If done properly, it can be more physically demanding than the traditional 1 ref 2 AR system because not only are you responsible for watching the offside line in your half of the field, you also have to hoof it down to the goal line (otherwise you're in no better position than a regular ref to see if a ball as gone across the line), as well as push up as far as about 20 yards from the other goal when the ball is in the attacking half of the field. (Maybe the author of the article envisions using 2 refs and 2 ARs?) I generally like the 2-ref system for HS games because it keeps both refs involved. But it's a lot of work, and may be unsuited for the much much faster games we're watching.

BTW, Colorado uses a 3-whistle system, where the "ARs" also have whistles and are responsible for both the offside calls in their halves of the field and for fouls. But I'll leave it to the Ref, who has played under this system, to discuss the merits/problems as he sees them.
