Fair article. I've long admired Beckham for his technical skill. I never really saw him in his prime, but was impressed by his obviously talented right foot as well as his on-the-field work ethic. But he never seemed to me the type of player who could take over a game, the way Zidane or Ronaldhino have.
I also think the way he was fired from the English national team reflects pooly on McClaren and team officials. It was so abrupt, as if suggesting he was responsible for England's poor showing in Germany. But for Beckham, England might not have gotten by Ecuador in the round of 16. No one played with more heart, and his reaction when subbed out in the Portugal game spoke volumes about how important this game was to him.
If he's cruising to retirement with the LA Galaxy, fine. My guess is that he'll show his skills, especially on set pieces. And maybe his heart and work ethic will rub off on some of his teammates, which can only help the USMT in the future.
